A Brief History of the Crisis Ministry

The Crisis Ministry of Princeton and Trenton was founded in 1980 by Nassau Presbyterian Church and Trinity Episcopal Church in Princeton. Originally, it was created to address the issues of hunger and homelessness in the Princeton area, but soon expanded to include the city of Trenton and its surrounding area. Since its inception, The Crisis Ministry has assisted low-income households in emergency situations for which there are often no other sources of help available.

In 1992, Princeton Outreach Projects, Inc. (POPI), was incorporated as a non-profit organization in the State of New Jersey. Crisis Ministry's sister programs are the Trenton After School Program and Trenton Children’s Chorus.

In addition to its two founding churches, The Crisis Ministry also partners with a support network of 60 Jewish, Universalist, and Christian congregations. The Crisis Ministry receives a wide variety of private and public funding from individual donors, foundations, corporations, and from the State of New Jersey, Mercer County, and the City of Trenton.

The Crisis Ministry commemorated its 30th year in 2010. Through our three decades we have remained steadfast in providing the most effective services we can for vulnerable people.

We are a well-respected partner in the network of nonprofit organizations that serve low-income people in Mercer County, and serve as the Gateway Agency for households in need of homelessness prevention services.
