The Crisis Ministry of Princeton and Trenton was founded in 1980 by Nassau Presbyterian Church and Trinity Episcopal Church in Princeton. Originally, it was created to address the issues of hunger and homelessness in the Princeton area, but soon expanded to include the city of Trenton and its surrounding area. Since its inception, The Crisis Ministry has sought to assist low-income people in emergency situations for which there are no other sources of help available.
In 1992, Princeton Outreach Projects, Inc. (POPI), was incorporated as a non-profit organization in the State of New Jersey. Crisis Ministry's three sister programs in POPI are the Trenton After School Program, Trenton Children’s Chorus, and Housing Initiatives of Princeton.
In addition to its two founding churches, The Crisis Ministry is now also sponsored by an interfaith network of 56 congregations. The Crisis Ministry receives funding from individual donors, foundations, corporations, grants from the State of New Jersey and from Mercer County, and annual fundraisers. As the Crisis Ministry has grown in size, visibility, and giving potential, it has become a well-respected part of the network of social services in Mercer County.
